Stalk-eyed Fly
Diasemopsis meigenii
- Habitat
- Tropical Africa & Southeast Asia, near streams
- Body length
- 10 mm
- Order
- Diptera · Diopsidae
Weird but real
Its eyes sit on stalks wider than its entire body. Males with longer eyestalks win mates.
Why it's cool
Inflates the eyestalks like balloons right after molting, then they harden. Evolution's weirdest billboard.
