Lantern Bug
Pyrops candelaria
- Habitat
- Tropical forests across Southeast Asia
- Wingspan
- 80 mm
- Order
- Hemiptera · Fulgoridae
Weird but real
Has a giant peanut-shaped hollow snout that's longer than the rest of its body. Old folklore swore it glowed; it doesn't, but the name stuck.
Why it's cool
Looks like a butterfly riding a tiny bagpipe. The lantern is purely decorative. Evolution gave it a vestigial party hat and refused to take it back.
