Iberian Spoonwing
Nemoptera bipennis
- Habitat
- Sunny limestone scrub, dry grassland, and flower-rich open areas in Iberia and nearby southwestern Europe
- Wingspan
- 55 mm
- Order
- Neuroptera · Nemopteridae
Weird but real
Its hindwings trail behind as two long spoon-tipped ribbons, so in flight it can look like one insect towing another.
Why it's cool
A slow, daylight-flying lacewing that turns ordinary wings into elegant streamers while visiting flowers like a tiny kite.
