Helicopter Damselfly

rare

Helicopter Damselfly

Megaloprepus caerulatus

Habitat
Rainforest canopy gaps of Central and South America
Wingspan
190 mm
Order
Odonata · Pseudostigmatidae

Weird but real

Hovers like a tiny helicopter to pluck orb-weaver spiders straight out of their webs, then breeds only in rainwater pooled in tree holes.

Why it's cool

The largest damselfly alive, a 19cm sliver with wand-tipped wings of blue. It rules tree-hole ponds no bigger than a teacup as apex predator.
