Harlequin Beetle

uncommon

Harlequin Beetle

Acrocinus longimanus

Habitat
Central and South American rainforests
Body length
75 mm
Order
Coleoptera · Cerambycidae

Weird but real

Front legs are longer than its entire body. Males use the absurd reach in slow-motion wrestling matches over female-controlled fig trees.

Why it's cool

Wears a hand-painted carnival mask on its back. The pattern is so intricate it looks like marquetry, and the body plan is pure long-armed weirdo.
