Hawaiian Happy-Face Spider

rare

Hawaiian Happy-Face Spider

Theridion grallator

Habitat
Rainforest understory on Hawaiian islands, beneath native leaves
Body length
5 mm
Order
Araneae · Theridiidae

Weird but real

Its pale abdomen carries a red-and-black smiley face, and no two spiders wear the same pattern.

Why it's cool

A grinning ghost of a spider whose cartoon face is genetically painted, unique per bug — evolution doodling for fun.

Photographs

Map of the Hawaiian archipelago showing the migration/colonization routes of Theridion grallator over time. Samples were taken from seven volcano regions (in red). T. grallator is not present on Kauai or Niihau so colonization may have occurred from there, or the nearest continen
