Giant Vinegaroon
Mastigoproctus giganteus
- Habitat
- Arid scrub, deserts, and subtropical woodlands of the southern United States and Mexico, sheltering under rocks and logs
- Body length
- 75 mm
- Order
- Thelyphonida · Thelyphonidae
Weird but real
When threatened, it sprays a mist rich in acetic acid, smelling sharply like vinegar.
Why it's cool
It looks like a scorpion with a whip tail, but its defense is a chemical vinegar fog instead of a sting.
