Flag-footed Bug

uncommon

Flag-footed Bug

Diactor bilineatus

Habitat
Central and South American rainforests, on passionflower vines
Body length
19 mm
Order
Hemiptera · Coreidae

Weird but real

Its hind legs end in iridescent leaf-shaped flags it waves like semaphore to tell predators it's not worth the chase.

Why it's cool

A true bug that grew literal flags on its shins and learned to wave them — billboards in place of armor.
