Exploding Ant

rare

Exploding Ant

Colobopsis explodens

Habitat
Lowland dipterocarp rainforests of Borneo
Body length
6 mm
Order
Hymenoptera · Formicidae

Weird but real

Cornered workers rupture their own bodies, coating enemies in a sticky, toxic yellow secretion and dying in the blast.

Why it's cool

A tiny rainforest ant turned its own abdomen into a one-use chemical weapon—the colony's last line of defense walks around alive.
