Eastern Dobsonfly
Corydalus cornutus
- Habitat
- Streamside vegetation across eastern North America
- Wingspan
- 130 mm
- Order
- Megaloptera · Corydalidae
Weird but real
Males grow 4cm curved mandibles they literally can't bite with. They are purely for showing off to females and wrestling other males.
Why it's cool
Like a tiny dragon designed by someone who wanted maximum drama with zero practical engineering. The tusks are pure performance art.
