Comet Moth
Argema mittrei
- Habitat
- Madagascan rainforests, on Weinmannia trees
- Wingspan
- 200 mm
- Order
- Lepidoptera · Saturniidae
Weird but real
Wings are bright gold and crimson, with 15cm streamer tails dangling like comet trails. Adults live 4-5 days; they have no mouths and cannot eat.
Why it's cool
One of the most spectacular silk moths on Earth. The cocoon is engineered with drainage holes so the tropical rain doesn't drown the developing pupa. Functional jewelry.
