Cinnabar Flat Bark Beetle
Cucujus cinnaberinus
- Habitat
- Old deciduous forests across Europe, beneath loose bark on dead and dying trees
- Body length
- 15 mm
- Order
- Coleoptera · Cucujidae
Weird but real
Its body is pressed almost paper-flat, letting it patrol the wafer-thin space between dead wood and loosened bark.
Why it's cool
A scarlet beetle engineered like a living bookmark—bright, broad, and improbably thin enough to vanish beneath bark.
