Blue Morpho

Blue Morpho

Morpho menelaus

Habitat
Rainforests of Central & South America (Mexico to Brazil)
Wingspan
150 mm
Order
Lepidoptera · Nymphalidae

Weird but real

The dazzling blue isn't pigment — it's nanostructure. Microscopic scales on the wings refract light, so the color shifts with viewing angle and can flash bright enough to be visible from a low-flying aircraft.

Why it's cool

Pure physics-as-color. No dye, no paint, just architecture that bends light into electric blue.
