Acorn Weevil

uncommon

Acorn Weevil

Curculio glandium

Habitat
Oak woodlands, hedgerows, parks, and gardens where acorns develop
Body length
8 mm
Order
Coleoptera · Curculionidae

Weird but real

Females use an extra-long snout to drill into green acorns, then turn around and place an egg in the hole.

Why it's cool

Its curved rostrum works like a living auger, letting the larva grow sealed inside a single acorn.
